Christ United Methodist Church’s Congregation
Has Grown From Three Parent Churches.
Originally established as Sunset Park Methodist Church, and renamed Chrish UMC when the congregation of Sunset Park Methodist and Elim Methodist merged in 1964, we also absorbed the former member of Greenwood Heights Dutch Reformed Church when it closed in 1972. We have been at the corner of 45th Street & 7th Avenue in the Sunset Park area of Brooklyn in one form or another since 1908.
When we account for all three parent churches of the congregation now known as Christ United Methodist Church our ministry of presence actually goes back 124 years to the “Greenwood Heights Protestant Union Sabbath School” that began in 1884.
We are a congregation that truly embraces the United Methodist motto, “open hearts, open minds, open doors.” Although our present congregation is primarily composed of Christians with Gujarati, Indian heritage, we desire to be a multicultural congregation for a multicultural neighborhood. As Gujarati Christians were welcomed by the predominantly Scandinavian congregation that Christ UMC once was, so we now welcome you – whatever your heritage.
Our worship blends elements of traditional worship with contemporary sensibilities as we sing old favorites as well as contemporary choruses and incorporate multimedia to invite the presence of the living God into our worship and our lives. Come join us!
